She and her husband, Lane Holliman, separated after having been married for a period of time before eventually deciding to divorce one another. Following the completion of her secondary schooling in Ottumwa, she looked for work in the hotel business, namely in positions such as serving customers and working behind bar. Two of her most cherished pastimes were in the kitchen: baking and cooking.

Serving others brought her a tremendous deal of personal fulfillment, and she did so in a variety of settings.
