On Friday, February 17, from 4 to 7 p.m., friends and family are invited to Ottawa Funeral Home for a viewing. Oakwood Memorial Park has been chosen as the burial site. Joan Downs was born to James and Margaret (Cooper) Downs on March 25, 1947, in Bozeman, Montana. On August 3, 1968, she wed Michael Jobst in Honolulu, Hawaii, at Star of the Sea Church.
Joan was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, and she has always had a deep connection to the ocean. She taught swimming at the YMCA for over 30 years and was a body surfer. She taught for 25 years at both Marquette and St. Bede Academy, and she led Marquette as principal for 10 years. She was a fantastic educator who supported her students at every possible event. She was a huge sports fan and hardly ever missed a game of any kind. She did it because she loved high school sports and wanted to inspire her students.
She and Mike frequently visited Florence, Italy, their favorite location, during her leisure time. She was active in the Ottawa Rotary Club, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and St. Frances Catholic Church. Her husband Michael, their children Jennifer (Andrew) Borkowski and James (Jennifer) Jobst, her grandchildren Torey, Allison, Finley, Kallyn, and Breckyn, her great-grandchildren Jasper and Nora, and her siblings Michelyn and Barbara Downs are among many who will miss her greatly.
