José Gomez Obituary, Member Of The California Catholic Conference Has Died
José Gomez Obituary, Death – Archbishop José Gomez of Los Angeles issued the following statement today in response to the untimely passing of Auxiliary Bishop David O’Connell: “I am very sad to hear that our dear Auxiliary Bishop David O’Connell has gone away unexpectedly. His passing comes at a time when our church needs him the most.
This information came to me as a total shock, and I am currently at a loss for words to fully convey how deeply I am affected by it. During his 45-year career in Los Angeles, Bishop David first served as a priest and later became a bishop. He was a man of strong faith who had a deep reverence for Our Lady. As a man of peace, he had a deep concern for the situation of the less fortunate and the displaced, and he wanted to establish a society in which the existence of each human was appreciated for the holiness of its intrinsic worth.
In addition to that, he was a good friend of mine, and I will think of him often in the future. I have no doubt that any of us will succeed. The family of Bishop David, who serves in Ireland, requests our prayers. I ask that you join me in praying for those things. May he rest in peace, and may Our Lady of Guadalupe wrap her loving arms around him as angels lead the way for him to enter the gates of paradise.
