The office of the coroner came to the official opinion that the death was the result of an unsuccessful attempt at suicide. On January 22, at around 1:30 p.m., officers with the WSU Police Department became aware of the terrible death that had occurred in the residence hall room of 19-year-old Luke Tyler. When police arrived at Perham Hall in response to a call about a person who was unable to care for themselves, they found Tyler already dead at the site. Annie Pillers, who served as the coroner for Whitman County, came to the conclusion that Tyler had killed himself once the investigation into his passing was over. She came to the realization that the interaction between alcohol and bupropion was a significant contributor to the extreme intoxication-related death that her spouse experienced.

As a result, she came to the conclusion that the problem was caused by the combination between alcohol and bupropion. According to Chief Gary Jenkins, the investigation into the events leading up to Tyler’s death is ongoing.
