York Street Shooting, Man shot to death early Tuesday, three people arrested
York Street Shooting – The Ottawa Police Department said in the afternoon on Tuesday that three people had been taken into custody in connection with the investigation into a fatal gunshot that occurred early in the morning on York Street. The ByWard market area was under investigation by homicide detectives who were present.
According to a press release, the three suspects were apprehended “following a rigorous ground search.” As of Tuesday afternoon, the police stated they would not name the people who had been arrested since the investigation was still ongoing. The identity of the individual who had passed away was withheld by the police until his next of kin could be contacted.
When contacted by this newspaper, the homicide unit of the police service declined to comment on the ongoing investigation due to the fact that it is still in its early stages. According to the Ottawa Police Service, officers responded to a call placed to 911 at approximately 1:20 a.m. reporting a shooting that occurred in the 200 block of York Street.
The victim succumbed to his wounds sometime later, becoming the city of Ottawa’s fourth homicide victim in 2023. On Tuesday, just a little after 11 a.m., officers of the forensic identification department of the Ottawa Police Service were observed entering a building that was closed off by police tape on York Street. While this newspaper was on the site, a substantial presence of tactical police and emergency medical personnel had been present at a nearby building on Cumberland Street at Clarence Street.
However, they had dispersed by the time the newspaper arrived. On Tuesday morning, portions of Cumberland Street, Murray Street, and Clarence Street were among the streets that were closed. Anybody who may have information was urged to get in touch with the homicide squad of the police service at 613-236-1222 extension 5493 or to get in touch with Crime Stoppers.
